Finding faith in the middle

It occurred to me the other day how our theology is really just an attempt to find balance between two unacceptable extremes. Christianity has been around long enough for most issues to have been moved to the extreme, brought back, then taken to the other extreme.

It is now our duty to attempt to find a balance, some sort of common ground upon which we can stand. I think this is why Christians (especially Lutherans) have so many doctrines that just don't make a lot of sense when taken as a complete system. We believe in things like the priesthood of all believers, yet only ordained clergy may administer the sacraments. We say that we are one body in Christ, yet we have more than 450 denominations of Christians in this country alone.

It is hard work to deal with this. Can we build an internally consistent system of theology without defaulting to one of the afore mentioned extremes? To me, this is one of the most pressing questions of our time since it impacts most every facet of the Christian life.

Catholicism and Calvinism are the only two systems that work entirely.
