Yesterday The Nightmare Before Christmas was on TV. I began to think about how so many of us and our congregations are like the character Jack in that movie. The rough outline of the movie is that Jack, a hero in Halloween world, discovers Christmas and is fascinated by the holiday. He moves to become a part of Christmas world. He makes a ton of ignorant mistakes causing him to almost destroy the holiday.
How often do we jump on the latest trend, be it religious or secular? Have you ever been to a congregation that adopted the praise and worship/projection model of worship and found that they do a horrible job with it?
We really need to think as individuals and as congregations about what it is that we do well. How can we be authentic in our worship? The sociologist in me tells me that the reason that we have so many different worship styles is that people are searching, or even longing for, many different styles of worship.
By the end of the movie Jack has rediscovered his love for Halloween. He resolves that next year will be the best Halloween ever. Oh that one day my congregation would recommit to praising God and blessing people in their own genuine and God-given way.
