a strange meeting

In the church we have two kinds of festivals, those that fall on the same day every year (like Christmas) and those that move according to seasonal markers (like Easter). This year has given us a strange meeting of two such festivals. Most all of you will be aware that today is Good Friday, the day on which we commemorate Jesus' death. March 25th, however, is usually celebrated as the Festival of the Annunciation. It is exactly 9 months until Christmas.

How strange it is to mark both the promise of the coming Emmanuel, and the death of the Lamb. Yet another delicious dichotomy in the life of the church.
