Sunday was a difficult day to be in worship. During the sermon, the pastor surprised all in attendance by announcing his resignation. This announcement came as a surprise to everyone in the congregation. It was plain to see that many in the congregation were shaken by the announcement. The news also meant a good bit of uncertainty for me because it meant that I was going to lose my supervisor and hence my position as youth director as well. (The good news that I have now is that this is NOT going to happen.)
In the Lutheran Book of Worship a profession of faith always comes after the sermon. After we all heard this startling news we all stood up and said the Nicean Creed. It really struck me. There is nothing in there about the pastor. Nothing about contemporary or traditional worship. It is all directed to the truths about God. Best of all, these truths have been professed for hundreds of years by those who have come before us in the faith.
There is a certain comfort in knowing that you are a part of something much larger than you in both the geographical and temporal sense. The Nicean Creed has never meant so much to me as it did that day.
