The TNIV Bible

International Bible Society recently released the full and final version of the TNIV (Today's New International Version.) It builds upon the scholarship from the NIV, but it also makes a few choices that have caused some controversy. This translation seeks to use gender-neutral language to refer to the people of God. For example, Paul no longer writes to the brothers in Corinth, he now writes to the brothers and sisters in Corinth. Another notable change shifts the responsibility of Jesus death from "the Jews" to "the Jewish leaders." The people in charge of World Magazine have started a blog dedicated to trashing the TNIV. While the writers are clearly biased, they do examine some of the difficult issues associated with translating the Bible. It is worth taking a look around.

Gender neutral, eh?

Maybe they shouldn't mention that Jesus was a man or that he told us to pray to our Father or that he was born of a woman.

It's so nice to know that some things never change, such as our ability to take something as holy as the Bible and do whatever we like to make ourselves feel better about what it says.

Have a good Ash Wednesday!
