Thus far in my (admittedly short) blogging career, I have attempted to steer clear of politics, and stick with religion. However, one trend that I am noticing bothers me so much that I cannot remain quiet any longer.
Even though both candidates outwardly profess to be followers of Jesus, it seems that many religious organizations are going to great lengths to tell us which candidate to support. While both sides are guilty, I think that the right is guilty of particularly egregious transgressions. It seems that many conservative Christian organizations are more interested in seeing Bush get elected, than they are interested in seeing their message get across.
I know that I have recently written a lot about the present
So, then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. ~Ephesians 2:19-22
It is about time that we, as Christians, claimed our place in the house the apostles built. This house will stand regardless of who wins the election in November. It will stand. Let’s focus on filling God’s house, not the White House.

As I've been moving into my apartment this week, I've been leaving EWTN run almost continuously. Fr. Frank Pavone, the founder and director of Priests for Life, has spoken on numerous programs throughout the week on the call to Christians to enter into political activism -- voting. Here's a bit from him:

We are working for the Kingdom that is to come, but that does not diminish our obligation to this world. Rather, it should give us a renewed sense of urgency and preparation for that Kingdom in this world. To build up a culture of life, we must be willing to use our given rights to vote (and ultimately, our gifts from God) to promote and execute in every way that we can God's will.
I agree that our gaze should be centered solely on Jesus. Our purpose is to love Him with all of our heart, mind, and body. But does that not include revealing and witnessing to our fellow man? Do we not give witness by our vote? Do we not practice our faith by supporting those who best promote God's future Kingdom on Earth?
God's house will stand, regardless of the election. But, it's up to us to get the invitations out to everyone and make sure we're all ready to arrive for the party. Let's hope and pray (and boy, should we pray) that America will have leaders that direct us closer to the Eternal Banquet, and not down the back alley to the other place....
