Clowning Communion

Pope John Paul II

As a person who is gradually assuming responsibility for planning corporate worship, I have to admit, May 22nd, Holy Trinity Sunday, is a bit of a challenge. The texts aren't much help; the Genesis 1 creation story, Matthew's great commission. These are not easy texts. Finding the right words is not an easy task. One Episcopal parish in New York City decided to minimize the number of words spoken and allow the liturgy and the Eucharist to speak for itself. If you are interested you can view a copy of the bulletin, or if you have an hour to kill, watch the service. I'll admit, there are parts of the service that I didn't like so much, but there were some other parts that I think were very well done. I woudn't be interested in a church that worshiped like this on a regular basis, but this was something unique to take in. Most importantly, I think that God was glorified and that people grew closer to God in the service. And ultimately, shouldn't that be the benchmark?

Clown ministry. I struggle with this - but ultimately my struggle centers around the eucharist. In the clown eucharist service I witnessed, there were no words spoke whatsoever at the table - what then of the words of institution? And the folly that these pictures point to...maybe I am a liturgical snob....but I can't go there. Now, all that being said, do I doubt that people found God there and God was present - well, no, that's not my job. But....
