Preparing to meet someone special

This time of year is all about preparation. We clean the house, buy and wrap presents, send cards, and do all sorts of other things to get ready. The Church does the same thing. Today is the first day of Advent. Advent is a season of preparation. We prepare for the Festival of the Nativity, for meeting the Christ child in a humble manger. We prepare for the time when that same Christ will return. But I wonder, are we prepared to meet Christ in those around us?

During Advent, the Lutheran lectionary is full of references to the Second coming. We are reminded that we are awaiting the return of the Messiah. But how should we prepare? It is hard to say. I think we should think about how prepared we are to meet Christ in our neighbors. In Matthew 25, Jesus reminds us that we encounter him in the naked, sick, incarcerated, hungry, and the thirsty. We all need to take some time away from preparing for the season, and use it to prepare to meet Christ in those around us.

purely as a sidenote, the advent angels in my church today were dressed as characters from The Matrix. symbolic of people who take the red pill and follow Jesus down the rabbithole.

and my senior pastor had a complete Neo outfit - the long monkish looking coat. I think today I had to concede that he really was a bigger dork than me. :)
