I knew I was going to have to write this one

I didn't want to write a political reaction post to this blog. However, there are a few things which I would like to comment upon.

Regardless of who wins these things will be true:
~ God is still God.
~ We have still been given the Great Commission.
~ The political dividing lines have divided our churches as well as so many other areas of life.
~ We should consider how our work in the world has changed (if at all) as a result of this election and its aftermath.

A few other observations:
~ In spite of all the efforts to get out a youth vote, 18-29 year olds only account for 17% of the voters in this election. This is simply a tragedy.
~ It is great to see so many of my Ohio neighbors so committed to voting that they are willing to stand in the rain for hours to participate in the democratic process.
~ Hearing people on so many different channels say exactly the same thing is REALLY frustrating.
~ I am happy to see a renewed interest in getting people to vote, and seeing that that right is not taken away from them.
~ On election night we didn't hear about Vietnam, we heard about healthcare, Iraq, and the economy.
~ There are no tanks in the streets.

I want to end tonight with a few words from the Lutheran Book of Worship:

Almighty God, giver of all good gifts: Look on your Church with grace and guide the minds of those who shall choose a president for this nation, that we may receive a faithful servant who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord

Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Help us elect trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and this serve you faithfully in our generation to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

hear hear.

people here in LA were rather despondent this morning. I reasoned much along the same lines as you did. God is still God. The Church's one foundation hasn't changed, and neither has its single aim and goal: to glorify God as we hold out the message of the Cross. The world's enmity towards us hasn't changed either. No matter who had won, our task still remains the same. Why should this affect our attitude as we run the race marked out before us?
