I recently learned some new information about the Lutheran church. Apparently, a church about 2 miles away from mine has dismissed someone from the church council for article teaching. I was not even aware that there were provisions for this sort of thing. It makes sense that there would be, but I had never heard of them. It sounds so Inquisition-like, he was dismissed for article teaching. Anyway, this guy was affiliated with the book of Urantia, and pushing it on other members of the congregation. If you are like me, you have never heard of the book of Urantia, therefore, I have included a little crash course below:
The book of Urantia was published by a small group known as "the Contact Commission" in the 1950s. The book was given as a revelation, from the Universal Father to a doctor in Chicago. It records, among other things, the beginning of the earth (called Urantia), the nature of the deity, and the life and ministry of Jesus. The book of Urantia was supposedly given to humanity by alien protectors of truth. Sort of like caretakers of some Encyclopedia Galactica (if you miss the reference, read Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy.) It claims to build upon the canonical Gospel accounts. It sees itself as a more highly evolved religion that Christianity and Judaism and regards these religions adherents as simple-minded.
If you are interested in reading the book of Urantia, you can find a full text of it online at the Urantia Foundation Homepage.
