Has anyone ever noticed how so many of our 'praise and worship' songs are incrediably self centered? There is just so much about "me." Jesus loves me, washes me, embraces me, touches me, holds me closely, ect. We seem like a bunch of people who just need a really big, fuzzy hug, not people who are worshiping the God of the universe. This seems like a really selfish way to worship. I have tried on more than one occasion to write my own PnW song, but to no avail. This leads me to my plea:
If you have the ability to write poetry, give this a shot. Write about eschatology (the end times.) You could draw inspiration from the books of Daniel, Isaiah, and Revelations. Don't get me wrong and take pages from the Left Behind series. Tell us about the coming of the King of Glory.
Write for us again the prayers and poems of those who have come before us in the faith. Find inspiration in St. Augstine, Thomas Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Wesley. Be willing to write not only songs of praise and of prayer, but also songs of lamet (the blues!)
It is about time that we stand up and claim the rich heritage available to us, and use it to worship God.
